Davy House, a facility for homeless families in Penzance, has an improved communal area thanks to LiveWest, Travis Perkins Managed Services, and DwT. Residents living in one of the self-contained flats in Davy House asked for a better kitchen space so that they could learn to cook healthy food with their children, and use the space for social activities and support sessions.

This very worthy project was awarded £2315 by Travis Perkins Managed Services, which funded the installation of the kitchen, electrical works and the purchase of a hob and oven. Installation contractors DwT provided new hard flooring for the kitchen area.

The new facilities in the communal room have since been used for multi-agency support meetings for residents. They are regularly used for sessions with residents to develop life skills, budgeting, employment and parenting skills and prepare families for their move into alternative longer-term accommodation.

One resident of Davy House said, “When I arrived here I was relieved to have somewhere safe, but I just wanted to lock myself away. Being able to come out of the flat and meet other people who’ve been through the same has made me so much more confident”.

Support workers who are employed to support the families at Davy House have found that since the kitchen refurbishment and communal events held in the space, residents are interacting with each other in ways they didn’t before. This in itself has boosted each individual’s confidence, which will enable residents to embrace some of the wider training opportunities provided in the kitchen and further afield.
