As part of our ongoing social value commitment with Swindon Borough Council (SBC), Travis Perkins Managed Services (TPMS) is dedicated to bridging the gap between education and industry. A key part of this commitment is investing in local young people, helping to open their minds to local career opportunities and building a strong future workforce for our industry.
The Initiative: School Engagement Day
In collaboration with our partner, SBC, TPMS recently organised and hosted a School Engagement Day for a fantastic group of students from The Deanery CE Academy. This event, supported by the Swindon and Wiltshire Careers Hub, provided students with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look into the dynamic world of a builders’ merchant at the Travis Perkins Swindon branch.
The day was centred on hands-on learning and practical, fun challenges. Students participated directly in key operational tasks, including a ‘pick and pack’ challenge and a team exercise to resolve a mock health and safety ‘spill’ scenario. This immersive approach gave them a first-hand experience of the branch environment and the importance of teamwork and safety. PWS generously donated branded hi-vis vests for the students, reinforcing the on-site health and safety message.
A Successful Outcome
The day proved to be a huge success. It provided the perfect opportunity to showcase an environment that young people might not otherwise see, all while highlighting the huge variety of career paths available in the construction and merchanting industry.
“It was fantastic to see the students so engaged throughout the day. We’re opening minds to local career opportunities and helping to bridge the gap between education and industry. Investing in our local young people is one of the most powerful ways we can deliver lasting value back into the Swindon community, and I’m excited to build on today’s success.”
Michelle Smith, Social Value Manager, TPMS
“The energy the students brought was amazing! It’s rewarding to share what we do and hopefully inspire the next generation to enter a career in construction. A massive well done to the whole team and our partners for making the day a success.”
