Throughout our partnership with Lewisham Homes, Travis Perkins Managed Services, is giving back to the community by funding community engagement projects. The Get Out, Go Wild social value scheme gives underprivileged kids in London the opportunity to learn valuable skills outside of their normal environment.
In 2016, Lewisham Homes and Wide Horizons worked in partnership to provide adventure learning for 37 young people living in Lewisham Borough: one of the most disadvantaged parts of inner London. All the children who took part were from families on a very low income, 16 of which had either a disability, medical need, or additional educational need.
The community investment project, funded entirely by Travis Perkins Managed Services was a five-day adventure programme which took place in the open countryside and helped build valuable personal skills such as confidence, trust, determination as well as social skills including teamwork and communication. It has helped create a new optimism, raised aspirations, and increased the likelihood of improved educational achievement. Many young people are now active members of their community with the necessary skills to build their own futures. As George Monbiot, writer, and environmental campaigner, has said: ‘A week in the countryside is worth three months in the classroom’. Travis Perkins is funding a second community engagement programme in 2017.
